Formation of allergenic oxidation products by autoxidation

Unsaturated hydrocarbons not allergenic themselves, can be activated outside the body by air oxidation (autoxidation) and form a mixture of oxidation products of which some are potent skin sensitizers. Monoterpenes used as fragrance components belong to this group. We investigate the most commonly used fragrance components, e.g. limonene, linalool and geraniol, with respect to autoxidation and their sensitising capacity.
